The man had watched that thing eat his children. What was there to say?
“COME ON!” he yelled suddenly, and everyone jumped in fright. “JUST FUCKING COME AND KILL ME! FUCKING KILL ME!”
I grabbed his shoulder but he shoved me away, standing up and screaming at the sky.
“FUCKING END IT! EAAT MEEEE!”
I don't even remember grabbing the rope, I just hooked him by the neck and heaved. He struggled; he didn't really want to die, at least not at my hands – he wanted to see the creature again, to fight it, as pointless as that may have been. His feet kicked, his back arched, he bucked and frothed and gurgled and fell quiet, heavy as his body became just so much meat.
Everyone was looking at me. I was still holding a dead man. I was still throttling his corpse. I forced my fists to unclench, to drop everything and let him slump to the ground. I couldn't remember how to breathe, so I forced myself to gulp the air down.
The worst part was the look in their eyes. They were horrified, yes, they were scared of me, but mostly they were grateful. They were grateful I'd killed a man, and for what?
It had been too late before I'd even grabbed his shoulder.
Challenge was thus:
ELEMENT ONE: Write a horror story of the monster/creature subgenre. Check out this nifty article for the distinctions among the different subgenres.
ELEMENT TWO: Choose your weapon at random. This weapon must be either wielded by the villain OR used by the protagonist to defend themselves.
Roll two dice. The numbers you roll correspond to the weapons listed below. You must choose only one weapon among the two that you have rolled. If you rolled the same number, tough luck.
Your arsenal of weapons:
1. Rope
2. Pipes
3. A rock hammer
4. A torch
5. A silver pendant
6. A birthday candle
ELEMENT THREE: Choose a horror trope at random. Horror stories are rife with clichés and stereotypes, which you are free to subvert or play straight as you wish.
Same drill as Element Two above. Roll two dice. The numbers you roll correspond to the tropes listed below. You must choose only one trope among the two that you have rolled. If you rolled the same number, tough luck.
Your cast of characters and toolbox of literary devices:
1. Beast In The Maze
2. Let's Split Up, Gang
3. Danger Takes A Backseat
4. Blood Is The New Black
5. Psycho Party Member
6. The End... Or Is It?
I don't think any of them are getting out of this alive...
